Does domain redirection help the search engine ranking?
Dear yahoo users.
We have over 15 domain names not hosted yet. Does hosting them and redirecting to point to our main domain would help with improving the ranking of our website? Is it safe practice with the search engines?
We would highly appreciate any help in this connection. You can contact via email or yahoo messenger. Blessings
Bishop Salamat Khokhar
Having 15 domain names will not help your search engine ranking because these domains are not viewed as different domains linking to your site, but rather considered as a single domain pointing to the same URL. Search engines such as Google see them as all the same domain if they are all pointed to the same IP address and index only one site.
The problem that arises from this situation is telling the search engines which one is your real domain name. I have seen some folks get into problems with this domain redirection.
The best option is to set up 301 permanent redirects for the other 15. Doing so will help the search engines know which domain name is correct and that they should index

I wouldn't highly advise that strategy. Just curious, why would you need over 15 domain names for a single website? I can imagine one or two would be ok, but more than that is a bit too excessive.
If you have websites that have a redirect, they may not appear in the search engines for a number of months. (or perhaps ever…)
